Time: Oct. 2022 - Dec. 2022
An AR app designed to get you out and exploring your local beaches. Users can take pictures of different creatures they find and the app identifies what they have found.
Ideation & Sketching
For this project, there were not many constraints. We were to design a product that was somehow related to our hometown. With Southern California being my home, I decided to create an app that would get people out onto the beach. The idea had a few different forms (e.g. a scavenger hunt, a beach cleanup) but I settled on an identification app for marine life.
Comparative Analysis
I did research on apps and games that have similar features to the app I was creating. As I did this research I thought about how the users of these apps would differ and how that might effect the user flow.
Who Is This For?
I created personas to understand who would use the app and why. I found that themes of fun and learning were repeated as I thought of why someone would use this app.
I then focused on one user by creating a user journey. This helped me to create a more focused brand and relevant features for the app.
Wireframes
With a user in mind, I started creating wireframes and developing the flow of the app. Being a child friendly app, I tried to keep the user flow minimal with simple touchpoints. Prompts and large touch targets helped in this process.
Styling & Iterating
The app is meant to be fun and colorful. Users should feel excited to use the app.
I also focused on creating a cohesive brand for this app. Organic shapes and more characterized text made the app feel more friendly and playful.

What Would I Change?
This project fulfilled the requirements of the course, however there were elements I would have liked to expand upon. We did not do any user interviews for this project and I felt like that left out a lot of good information. I would like to interview individuals similar to the persona that was created to get their insight on what would make an engaging app for adults and children alike.
